Paxil

What is Paxil?

Paxil (Paroxetine hydrochloride), manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, is a drug known as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI).

Who takes it, and for what condition?

It is used to treat psychological problems including depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), social anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and panic disorder.

How does Paxil work?

Paxil and other antidepressants impact serotonin, a chemical in the brain. Serotonin helps transmit messages along nerves in the brain. When the serotonin is out of balance, depression and other conditions can occur. Paxil blocks the reuptake of serotonin, so it can remain between the brains’ nerve cells and allow them to pass along their message.

In children and young adults, Paxil can induce suicidal thoughts. Numerous lawsuits have been filed alleging Paxil and other antidepressants caused people to commit suicide.

Paxil may also be associated with birth defects. The FDA asked GlaxoSmithKline to change the drug’s classification so that pregnant women were advised not to take it. Paxil may also pose death risks for patients with heart disease.
