Who uses it and for what conditions?

Xarelto is in the class of drugs called “new oral anticoagulants” (NOACs). It is prescribed to treat or prevent blood clots, including pulmonary embolisms (PE) and deep vein thrombosis. It is also prescribed to patients with atrial fibrillation to prevent strokes. Patients who have had knee or hip replacement surgery are often prescribed Xarelto. An alternative to Coumadin (warfarin), Xarelto is promoted by Bayer and Janssen as superior to Coumadin as it does not require frequent blood testing.
