What are Dostinex and Permax?

Dostinex (cabergoline) is manufactured by Pfizer. Permax (pergolide) is manufactured by Eli Lilly. Both are dopamine agonists.

Who takes them, and for what conditions?

People suffering from Parkinson’s Disease, restless leg syndrome, or hyperprolactinemia, a hormonal disorder, take Dostinex or Permax.

How do Dostinex and Permax work?

Parkinson’s symptoms appear when cells in the brain stop producing dopamine, a neurotransmitter that influences thought and movement areas of the brain. Dopamine agonists directly stimulate the parts of the brain where dopamine works and mimic its function.

Dostinex and Permax have been found in several studies to damage heart valves, causing them to leak.
