Birth defects related to anti-depressants / SSRIs

Thornton & Naumes lawyers specialize in both birth defect litigation and pharmaceutical litigation. As a part of these specialty practice areas, the firm is investigating the recently established association between taking anti-depressants, such as Selective Serotonin-Reuptake Inhibitors ("SSRIs"), in late pregnancy and a rare birth defect known as "persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPH) of the newborn." On February 9, 2006, The New England Journal of Medicine published a study indicating that women who take SSRI medication in late pregnancy have a significantly increased risk for delivering infants with the PPH birth defect. In addition, the SSRI Paxil (paroxetine hydrochloride) has been recently linked to other kinds of birth defects, including serious heart defects, in newborns.

Other well-known and prescribed SSRI medications include:

    • Prozac (fluoxetine HCL)
    • Zoloft (sertraline HCL)
    • Celexa (citalopram hydrobromide)
    • Luvox (fluvoxamine maleate) (prescribed for OCD)
    • Lexapro (escitalopram hydrobromide)

If you have a child who has experienced such a condition, you and your child may be entitled to recover substantial legal damages. Please contact us for a confidential consultation with one of our attorneys.

Birth defects and other reproductive injuries are also linked to exposure to toxic chemicals.
