What is Paraquat?

Paraquat dichloride, commonly referred to as “Paraquat,” is a highly toxic herbicide. It is so toxic that, according to the EPA, one small sip can kill a person. It is banned in over 30 countries including the European Union and China. Evidence suggests that chronic exposure to paraquat may increase the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease by 200% to 600%.

Paraquat dichloride is sold under several trade names including but not limited to Gramoxone, Firestorm, Ortho-Paraquat, Helmquat 3SL, Para-SHOT, Parazone 3SL, and Quik-Quat. It is primarily used as a liquid spray.

What Is Paraquat Used For?

Paraquat herbicide has been used on crops in the United States since the 1960s as a weedkiller. It is used to control weeds and invasive grasses. Paraquat is most commonly used on corn, cotton, soybeans, and vineyard grapes, but is used on more than 100 different crops in the United States.

Because of its extreme toxicity, Paraquat is restricted to commercial use by the EPA, and can only be used by certified applicators who have completed training on how to mix, load and apply the weed killer. Individuals who are not trained are not even allowed to assist a licensed applicator under EPA regulations. Because application is limited to certified applicators, these are the people who are most at risk of the health problems caused by exposure to Paraquat.

Paraquat and Parkinson’s

Studies have shown an association between Parkinson’s disease (PD) and exposure to Paraquat. According to the Unified Parkinson’s Advocacy Council (UPAC), a group of state, regional and national PD organizations, “scientific research indicates low-level chronic exposure [to Paraquat] significantly increases the risk of Parkinson’s disease“. The UPAC has called on the EPA to ban Paraquat.
